In 2020, the world was forced to look death in the eye. It exposed a hard truth most of us would rather avoid: very few people are ready not in the ways that matter when the moment actually comes. And when there is no clear plan, even close, loving families can come apart under the weight of it.

I have watched it happen, again and again, in my own community. As the first generation of the Windrush era began to pass, their children were left to navigate wills, probate and funerals with almost no map and even less room to grieve. These were people who had built something from very little: they bought homes, created security, and left a legacy through sheer discipline and hard work.

And yet, without clear instructions, those same estates became sources of stress, dispute, and sometimes division that never healed.

This is not theory to me. It is personal. My own family lived through the cost of unclear arrangements a rift that lasted ten years, fractured relationships, and brought everything to a standstill. Not because anyone meant harm, but because no one was left a clear picture to follow.

Her name was Evelyn

She raised five children on her own, and she did it with a discipline and a clarity that shaped every one of us. She believed in being organised, being honest and taking responsibility for what you leave behind.

In her final days and nights we had several conversations. One statement stays with me. Mummy say, “Lin, I’m not ready to leave you all, I love you all so much, life is short”.

This work carries her name because it carries her spirit. And it carries her number 48, the last home she lived in. The last door that was hers.

I’m Linda Evelyn’s daughter. I built Evelyn48 so that no other family has to learn what mine did the hard way: that love, on its own, is not enough. Love still needs a plan.
